The steps in brief: The Upstox explainer states a confirmation letter in 7 to 10 days.

How to close a demat account in India: step by step
Step 1: Check what is in the account
Log in to your broker and list equity shares, ETFs, bonds, mutual fund units held in demat form, and any IPO or rights allotments pending credit. Also check for corporate action benefits that are yet to arrive, such as dividends or a bonus issue.
Step 2: Sell or transfer every holding
You have two routes. Sell the holdings and withdraw the proceeds, or transfer them to another demat account in your name using a Delivery Instruction Slip (DIS) or the broker’s online transfer. Our broker comparison can help you pick where to move your holdings. Selling may trigger capital gains tax, so check the tax cost before you sell; for tax impact, see our capital gains calculator.
Step 3: Clear dues and settle the ledger
Pay any outstanding annual maintenance charge (AMC), account debit or margin shortfall. Withdraw any credit balance in your trading ledger to your bank account. A negative ledger blocks closure at most brokers.
Step 4: Choose the type of closure
An aggregator explainer from Upstox describes two types: a basic closure where holdings are zero and you simply close, and a transfer-and-close where holdings are moved to another demat account first and then the account is closed. Pick the one that matches your Step 2 choice.
Step 5: Submit the closure form
Download the broker’s demat account closure form, sign it as per the specimen on record, and submit it online or by courier. Joint holders sign as per the operating instruction. If you transfer holdings, include the Client Master Report (CML) of the target account and the DIS if the broker asks for it. The Upstox explainer contradicts itself on whether closure is online or physical, so confirm the route with your own broker. Zerodha, as one example, documents an offline closure by courier for NSDL accounts.
Step 6: Get the written confirmation
Ask for a closure confirmation letter or email. The Upstox explainer states a confirmation letter in 7 to 10 days. Keep it. If you want to reopen later, you will need to do fresh KYC and open a new account, and your existing trading account at the same broker is usually closed too unless you ask otherwise.
Basic closure vs transfer and close
| Route | What it means | When to use it | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic closure | All holdings sold or withdrawn; account then closed | You have no securities left | Upstox explainer, accessed 7 Oct 2026 |
| Transfer and close | Holdings moved to another demat account in your name, then account closed | You want to keep your securities | Upstox explainer, accessed 7 Oct 2026 |
How long does demat account closure take?

| Item | Stated timeline | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Zerodha closure for NSDL accounts (offline, by courier) | About 2 working days after receipt | Zerodha support, accessed 7 Oct 2026 |
| Closure confirmation letter | 7 to 10 days | Upstox explainer, accessed 7 Oct 2026 |
| Credit card closure under RBI rules | 7 working days | RBI Master Direction 2022, via CardTrail 19 Mar 2026 |
| Loan document return under RBI rules | 30 days | RBI directions as reported, accessed 7 Oct 2026 |
The chart puts these timelines side by side, so you can see how a demat closure compares with the other account closures in this series. Timelines are stated by the sources above, not guaranteed. Delays usually come from courier time and mismatched signatures.
Charges to expect
An aggregator summary says SEBI does not allow a fee for closing a demat account, though brokers may still collect pending AMC and other dues. We could not confirm this from a primary SEBI or depository source in this review, so check your broker’s schedule of charges and ask the broker to confirm in writing that no closure fee applies. The depositories publish investor information on the CDSL and NSDL sites, and SEBI publishes the rules.
Broker-wise closure details: what we could and could not verify
| Broker | Verified closure detail | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Zerodha | Offline closure by courier for NSDL accounts, about 2 working days (Zerodha support, accessed 7 Oct 2026) | Partly verified |
| Upstox | Basic closure vs transfer and close; confirmation letter in 7 to 10 days; online vs physical route unclear in source | Partly verified |
| Groww, Angel One, ICICI Direct, HDFC Securities, Kotak Securities | No dated broker source reviewed | Not verified |
| Dhan, 5paisa, Paytm Money, Motilal Oswal, Sharekhan, Axis Direct | No dated broker source reviewed | Not verified |
We only list what a dated source supports. For every other broker, assume the same four steps (empty the account, clear dues, submit the form, get confirmation), and confirm timelines and forms with the broker before you start.
What if the broker delays or refuses?
Write to the broker’s compliance officer, quoting your client ID and form submission date. If it is not resolved, file a complaint on SEBI’s SCORES portal and with the depository. Keep proof of form submission and courier receipts.

Frequently asked questions

An aggregator summary says SEBI does not allow a closure fee, but pending AMC and dues are still payable. We could not confirm this from SEBI directly, so ask your broker in writing.
Can I close a demat account with shares in it?
No. You must sell the shares or transfer them to another demat account in your name first.
How long does it take to close a demat account?
Zerodha documents about 2 working days for offline NSDL closures after receipt, and Upstox’s explainer mentions a confirmation letter in 7 to 10 days. Other brokers are not verified.
Can I close a demat account online?
Some brokers allow it, but the route varies and the Upstox source contradicts itself. Confirm with your broker before you start.
What is a DIS and when do I need it?
A Delivery Instruction Slip is the form that instructs your depository participant to transfer securities. You need it for a transfer-and-close, unless your broker offers an online transfer.
What happens to my trading account when I close my demat account?
Most brokers close the linked trading account as well. Check with the broker if you want to keep the trading account for another purpose.
